Manuel Tainha (1922-2012) is a reference figure in Portuguese architecture of the second half of the 20th century, with an important role in the renewal of ways of thinking and making architecture from the post-war period onwards. As a professional architect, his first major project was the Tamariz swimming pools (1954),in Estoril. Also worth mentioning is the Santa Bárbara guesthouse (1957-66), which voluntarily projects itself into the landscape in a study of the relationship between the building and its various internal levels and the shape of the land, an experience that continued, for example, in the Gallo house in São Pedro de Moel (1970-75) or in the Martins dos Santos house in Cascais (1971-75). The Freixial house (1958-60) can also be associated with the inn due to its approach to the lessons of popular architecture. The Escola Agroindustrial de Grândola (1959-63) and the Escola de Regentes Agrícolas de Évora (1960-65) represent the maturity of the architect who manipulated with great ease the knowledge of prestigious international examples and the conditions of the program and the specific site.
