The work of Kristian Gullichsen belongs to the tradition of modern Finnish architecture. His design work over the past 30 years is symptomatic of a long evolution that begins with the extraordinary experience of Alvar Aalto, in whose studio he trained as a youth. Then in 1973, with Eikki Kaimaro and Timo Vormala, he founded Arkkitehdit KY, which immediately became one of the most interesting expressions of the new Finnish architecture. The office quickly distinguished itself, in fact, for its experimentation with multiple prefabricated systems in reinforced concrete and wood, applied in the design of collective residences and large industrial complexes. This monograph, edited by Sebastiano Brandolini, represents a definitive interpretation of the work of the Finnish architect and his office: a selection of 30 of the most important works realized by Gullichsen since 1968 traces a designing evolution that ranges from the project for civil and parochial centers (Pieksmaki) to private and collective dwellings (Kangasala, Helsinki, Espoo), from industrial plans to commercial buildings (expansion of the Stockmann department stores, Helsinki), from experimentation with prefabrication to urban redesign. This series of works, built primarily in Finland, is completed by recent projects built elsewhere in Europe and never before presented, testifying to the Gullichsen's international success in recent years, such as the Finnish Embassy at Stockholm, the new Modern Art Museum in Valencia a nd the new university building in Utrecht. The volume includes a rich series of original images that enable the reader to follow each project in structural detail and the various phases of construction.
